$300-400, usually. Puppies...gotta love 'em. I don't spend anything on the goat, though. He basically has everything he needs, fresh water, grass...etc. Not much care involved.

I don't have a pet. If I did, I can't imagine spending more than $200 US on it in an average year. I'm imagining a cat. I'm pretty sure that cat food costs less than 55 cents a day...

It's hard to give an average. My wife has spent a lot on the fish tanks, but much of it was setup costs which are now behind us. I believe that we spend about $100/month on electricity for her 4 large tanks (pumps and heaters), plus supplies... We have 2 cats as well, that probably run around $500/year (including yearly vet visits).

I know it's over $5,000 between ferrier, vet, feed/food, toys/sadles/tack, and then some!

2 dogs, 3 goats, and 13 horses at the moment.

Quicken says last year I spent $290.89 on my two cats, including one visit to the vet for each of them, food, and a few toys. But that doesn't include all the litter, which is probably another $100. So I'll say somewhere in the high $300 range.

I don't know as I've never kept track of how much we spend on Tilly. The cost is split between my son as I ( pet food, litter, vet visits, etc.)

Probably about 300-400 on the 2 cats and 2 dogs... A little more if more visits to the vet are required.

The fish are pretty new so I'm going to guess about 100-200 per year if you don't count buying new tanks.

between $500-$750, I imagine....on good years - for one pet - a Boston Terrier.

I would fit in the highest category - over $5,000. More like $7,000 or more. That breaks down to around $100 a week for food, litter and treats, and the rest for vet visits. Spent $700 this month alone at the vet.

(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 8-Feb-2004 11:13am

That sure doesn't sound like enough. $240 a year? That's not even $5.00 a week. You've gotta be spending more than that overall considering food, litter and trips to the vet. Unless you feed them junk food, let them go to the bathroom outside and don't take them to the vet much.

On a per cat basis I average $175 per year. And that's for ones who don't get sick ever. I can easily hit $500 per cat on ones who have on-going problems. I've had two that cost me $2,500 in one shot over the last couple years. One had all his teeth pulled because of stomatitus and the other had liver problems.

food you should try Purina's new indoor cat formula. My cats puke no more *smile*

I've been using Iam's, but this week I have changed to Professional brand which I order from my vet. It's 25% cheaper and has better ingredients.

We use Iam's and I've been wanting to introduce something new. I'll have to look into the Professional brand. The only thing I've seen available through our vet is Science Diet.
cerealkiller Silver Star Survey CreatorGold Qualifier
posted 8-Feb-2004 1:27pm

Look up Professional on the internet. Their website has a link showing you where it is sold. I compared the ingredients with Iam's. Professional has less ash, more omega fatty acids, and flaxseed which Iam's doesn't.

Their food is available in pet stores, but I now get it from my vet since he doesn't charge me sales tax on it. He charges $15.00 for 20 lb bag vs. average of $24.00 a bag plus tax I was paying for Iam's.

www.professionalpetfood.com If you don't have a local dealer I see websites where you can order it.

Forget Science Diet. I'd stick with Iam's before that.

I should know a bit about cat food and care - I go through 50 lbs of dry cat food a week.

Wow, thanks a lot! And thanks from my kitties too! I thought our cat food bill was bad, jeeze. Our oldest cat (she's about two and a half) throws up quite a bit, and we're hoping that a food change will help her.

My cats puked on iams and science diet. I also tried the Purina one hairball formula and they still puked. I even gave them hairball treats and put petroleum jelly on them so they would like it off. Still no luck. So far (fingers crossed) they really like the indoor formula purina makes. And no puking *smile*

I spend $80 every two months which gets me about 60 cans of good food (they share one can per day), a 20 lb bag of NutroMax which seems to be a healthy brand (I immediately transfer it to smaller plastic jugs to keep it fresher), and a 20 lb refill of generic bulk clumpable litter which goes quite a way if just remove the clumps and keep topping it off.
My trick for catbox cleaning is to have two catboxes. I place a large pasta strainer in a clean empty box, and let the old litter sift into the clean box. I then give the new box a spin so the older cat litter is around the periphery which gets sprayed first, and I top off the fresh litter in the center of the box.
So far in the last few years I've had one $300 vet bill when one of my cats had an absessed gouge of some sort.
My cats take after me, having no medical problems. I can see that such would radically increase the cost of maintaining a cat.
and I live on $837/mo. which probably doesn't sound like much either.

(reply to ASexyBabe) posted 9-Feb-2004 8:28am

Is it specific for indoor cats because of those cats not being able to get to grass etc. outside to help their digestion? An indoor cat formula is just a new idea to me, so I'm curious.

You're doing pretty good. NutroMax is good food, but can't see how 20 lb of litter lasts for 2 months. Even adding litter and cleaning (we scoop our boxes twice a day) it eventually gets old, damp and not good anymore. We totally toss the litter at least once a month.

Geez, $837 would get me by for 4 days based on my monthly expenses. I spend over $500 a month just on the cats and dog alone. Of course, you only have your two 'kids'.

(reply to cerealkiller) posted 9-Feb-2004 8:54pm

I live in LA, rather opposite of the bay, humidity wise. and they are indoor/outdoor cats, so though they always prefer the box, I can get by scooping it once a day before it's visibly clumpy.
I have two real kids too, far far away, so with all my family I spend at least $400 on christmas and probably another $300 on b-day gifts. I buy things like used quality guitar effects and make plenty of gifts.
